Land Rover plans to start sales of a convertible version of the Evoque sport-utility vehicle next year, marking its first modern open-top model.
“The convertible market isn’t huge, but it’s an opportunity for us,” Finbar McFall, Jaguar Land Rover’s product marketing director, said at an event at the Geneva International Motor Show.
While SUVs have become widely popular around the world, ragtop versions are rare. In addition to topless versions of offroaders like the Jeep Wrangler, Nissan makes the $41,995 Murano CrossCabriolet.
The convertible Evoque, which was displayed as a concept car in Geneva in 2012, is part of an expansion by Jaguar Land Rover, the British luxury-car maker owned by India’s Tata Motors. The plans include the Jaguar F-PACE, the brand’s first crossover next year.
The UK manufacturer aims to boost sales to a record of more than 500,000 vehicles this year as the entry-level Jaguar XE sedan and the Land Rover Discovery Sport SUV go on sale. Jaguar Land Rover sold 462,678 vehicles in 2014, an increase of 9 per cent for its fifth straight year of growth.
The variant of the $41,100 Evoque will be built at the company’s Halewood plant in the UK.
“It’s important that the car will still have the unparalleled traction and still have offroad capability of a Land Rover,” said Mr McFall. “It’s interesting to remember that the very first Land Rovers, around 1948, were also open-top cars.”

TEACHERS' PAY - WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Pay varies significantly depending on the school, its rating and the curriculum. Here's a rough guide as of January 2021:
- top end schools tend to pay Dh16,000-17,000 a month - plus a monthly housing allowance of up to Dh6,000. These tend to be British curriculum schools rated 'outstanding' or 'very good', followed by American schools
- average salary across curriculums and skill levels is about Dh10,000, recruiters say
- it is becoming more common for schools to provide accommodation, sometimes in an apartment block with other teachers, rather than hand teachers a cash housing allowance
- some strong performing schools have cut back on salaries since the pandemic began, sometimes offering Dh16,000 including the housing allowance, which reflects the slump in rental costs, and sheer demand for jobs
- maths and science teachers are most in demand and some schools will pay up to Dh3,000 more than other teachers in recognition of their technical skills
- at the other end of the market, teachers in some Indian schools, where fees are lower and competition among applicants is intense, can be paid as low as Dh3,000 per month
- in Indian schools, it has also become common for teachers to share residential accommodation, living in a block with colleagues
Family reunited
Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe was born and raised in Tehran and studied English literature before working as a translator in the relief effort for the Japanese International Co-operation Agency in 2003.
She moved to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies before moving to the World Health Organisation as a communications officer.
She came to the UK in 2007 after securing a scholarship at London Metropolitan University to study a master's in communication management and met her future husband through mutual friends a month later.
The couple were married in August 2009 in Winchester and their daughter was born in June 2014.
She was held in her native country a year later.

WHAT ARE NFTs?
Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) are tokens that represent ownership of unique items. They allow the tokenisation of things such as art, collectibles and even real estate.
An NFT can have only one official owner at one time. And since they're minted and secured on the Ethereum blockchain, no one can modify the record of ownership, not even copy-paste it into a new one.
