Philip H. Southwell

is in as the new CEO of EFG-Hermes in the Gulf (excluding Saudi Arabia). Southwell comes from Deutsche Bank, where he was head of global banking for central and eastern Europe, Turkey, the Middle East and Africa (try saying that in one breath). He'd been at Deutsche Bank since 1997. During his tenure there, he set up and ran the firm's Asia-Pacific banking business, and managed to broker some big deals, including the sale of Vodaphone in 2000 for $5.2bn and the IPO of Halifax, a major UK bank. He'll officially start at EFG at the beginning of July.

"EFG-Hermes is an Arab institution run to global standards," Southwell said today. "No regional or global player is better positioned to capture the opportunities that now exist across the GCC, let alone those that will present themselves when global markets begin their upswing. I'm delighted to be joining the firm."
