Is it possible to return to the UAE despite not cancelling a previous visa? I started working in Abu Dhabi last July and went home in October. Once I got home I decided not to come back but the problem is that my visa has not been cancelled. I have now been offered a new job and want to come back. Is it possible to return to cancel my old visa and then apply for a new one with the new company? RM, Philippines
From the information provided it appears that RM was reported as an absconder – standard practice if someone leaves the country without giving and working proper notice. Walking out of a job in this way is a breach of contract. In such cases, the individual will receive a ban for at least six months (so 180 days) and in some cases for up to a full year. It can be possible to re-enter the country on a tourist or visit visa, but it is not possible to obtain a new employment-related visa while an absconding ban is still in place. RM also needs to arrange for his employment visa to be properly cancelled as that will also cause a problem when he re-enters the UAE. His previous employer should have done this but if this is not the case he will need to contact the General Directorate of Residence and Foreigner Affairs in Abu Dhabi to make arrangements to cancel it.
I was a resident in Dubai when I secured my driving licence. Then a few months ago I moved away for my studies. My licence is due for renewal soon, but I cannot visit and my residency will also get cancelled in a couple of months as I'll be out of the UAE for more than six months. My family is still there though, so I'll be visiting them often but on a visit visa after cancellation of residency. I would like to retain my licence, which I got with a lot of effort and cost, and want to be able to drive there. So can I renew my licence with a visit/tourist visa? ZS, Canada
A UAE driving licence is valid for 10 years and can then easily be renewed but only if the holder has a residency visa. If someone is not a UAE resident, with a valid visa, it is not possible to renew a licence. If ZS’s residency expires as he is out of the country for over six months, and note that this still needs to be properly cancelled to avoid issues on re-entering on any type of visit visa, he will not be permitted to renew his UAE driving licence. If he has a replacement licence from another country that is valid, he will be able to drive a hired car with his tourist visa, and may also be able to drive a car belonging to a first-degree family member but only with the prior agreement of the insurance company.
