British telecoms giant targets Middle East region with hiring spree

British Telecommunications (BT) plans a hiring spree in the Middle East, Africa and Turkey, as it aims to double its business in those markets.

The UK operator says it will add around 170 employees across the three regions, focusing on corporate telecoms services.

Infrastructure and research are also part of BT's planned regional investment, which it said would be rolled out over the next 18 months.

The company did not disclose the value of its planned investment in the three regions.

BT said the total addressable market in those regions was worth GBP5.4 billion in 2011.

The company currently works with local clients including Emirates, Etihad and Jumeirah, and says it will boost its sales team in the region to seek additional clients.

Typical services offered by the company include telecoms networks, cloud computing and contact-centre management.

BT reported an annual turnover of £20 billion (Dh115.5m) in 2011.
