New York Comic Con is under way, bringing hundreds of comic book fans out in force.

One of the major staples of any Comic Con event is the cosplay efforts, with fans dress up as their favourite characters from films, books or video games. Since 2014, the event has also hosted the Eastern Championships of Cosplay.

Costumes are judged in four skill categories: Needlework, Amour, FX (effects) and Larger than Life as well as an overall category. The top three winning cosplayers receive cash prizes, with the overall winner entered into the final held in Chicago.

New York Comic Con was first held in 2006 and is not affiliated with the long running San Diego Comic-Con. The Comic Con has risen in attendance every year.

This year's guest list included Marvel stars Tom Hiddleston, Paul Rudd and Benedict Wong as well as Glow stars Betty Gilpin and Kia Stevens. Former Doctor Who star Christopher Eccleston was also in attendance as well as The Good Place's Jameela Jamil and Molly Ringwald of Riverdale. The event runs from Thursday, October 3 until Sunday, October 6.
