Region’s first animation festival looking for submissions

Animate Dubai, the latest addition to Dubai Culture’s Dubai Art Season and the GCC’s first animation festival, will debut on the April 22.

The organisers of the four-day festival have called for submissions of Arab and International feature-length and short films.

“Animate Dubai is a UAE based force with the sole purpose of stimulating quality animation,” says its founder, Lina Younes. “I founded The Animation Chamber in 2012, a grassroots Dubai-based organisation that started out as the UAE’s first stop-motion collective and educational initiative.

“Through our work at The Animation Chamber, we realised that the UAE is home to an animation sector that shows considerable talent and creative potential. Animate Dubai strives to encourage the UAE-based animation makers and fans alike to provide them with an international showcase. It is the first in the region to create the infrastructure catering to the industry’s bloom.

“Animate Dubai acts as a platform for UAE universities, animation schools and institutes to showcase their talent and provide them with an opportunity to grow their skills. Special projects will be exhibited at the event from the American University of Sharjah, the American University of Dubai and Zayed University.”

The event has received an overwhelming response from animators from all around the region and the world.

“We are also very proud to announce our strategic partnerships with Dubai Studio City as well as some of the world’s best Animation Festivals, like Annecy (France), Ta7rik (Tunisia), and ASIFA China to name a few,” says Younes.

The four-day festival will feature an opening ceremony; daily Arab and International film screenings; daily educational workshops catering to different age groups and expertise levels; engaging panel sessions and talks by some of the leading lights of the industry; an animation film market connecting the talent to funding bodies; creative animation installations; daily live performances including theatre, concerts & visuals; a corner DVD and bookstore; and a closing awards ceremony.

Animate Dubai is inviting animation artists to be part of this exciting new journey by submitting their films, features and shorts, by February 8, 2015, to: www.animatedubai.com/submissions-2015.

WHAT FANS WILL LOVE ABOUT RUSSIA

FANS WILL LOVE
Uber is ridiculously cheap and, as Diego Saez discovered, mush safer. A 45-minute taxi from Pulova airport to Saint Petersburg’s Nevsky Prospect can cost as little as 500 roubles (Dh30).

FANS WILL LOATHE
Uber policy in Russia is that they can start the fare as soon as they arrive at the pick-up point — and oftentimes they start it even before arriving, or worse never arrive yet charge you anyway.

FANS WILL LOVE
It’s amazing how active Russians are on social media and your accounts will surge should you post while in the country. Throw in a few Cyrillic hashtags and watch your account numbers rocket.

FANS WILL LOATHE
With cold soups, bland dumplings and dried fish, Russian cuisine is not to everybody’s tastebuds.  Fortunately, there are plenty Georgian restaurants to choose from, which are both excellent and economical.

FANS WILL LOVE
The World Cup will take place during St Petersburg's White Nights Festival, which means perpetual daylight in a city that genuinely never sleeps. (Think toddlers walking the streets with their grandmothers at 4am.)

FANS WILL LOATHE
The walk from Krestovsky Ostrov metro station to Saint Petersburg Arena on a rainy day makes you wonder why some of the $1.7 billion was not spent on a weather-protected walkway.

Haemoglobin disorders explained

Thalassaemia is part of a family of genetic conditions affecting the blood known as haemoglobin disorders.

Haemoglobin is a substance in the red blood cells that carries oxygen and a lack of it triggers anemia, leaving patients very weak, short of breath and pale.

The most severe type of the condition is typically inherited when both parents are carriers. Those patients often require regular blood transfusions - about 450 of the UAE's 2,000 thalassaemia patients - though frequent transfusions can lead to too much iron in the body and heart and liver problems.

The condition mainly affects people of Mediterranean, South Asian, South-East Asian and Middle Eastern origin. Saudi Arabia recorded 45,892 cases of carriers between 2004 and 2014.

A World Health Organisation study estimated that globally there are at least 950,000 'new carrier couples' every year and annually there are 1.33 million at-risk pregnancies.
