Scripts by Sylvester Stallone shouldn’t be sniffed at – he did get nominated for an Oscar for writing Rocky. But this latest effort feels like a doodle dashed off during his coffee break. Originally intended as a vehicle for himself – about 10 years ago – it now stars his Expendables co-star Jason Statham. The British actor plays a former drug enforcement agent who gets tangled up with some local meth dealers – led by James Franco’s psychotic “Gator”. Along for the ride are Winona Ryder and Kate Bosworth, both getting dirt under their fingernails as Franco’s sidekick and sister, respectively. But after some low-life thrills, it ends up sliding towards formulaic dullness.
