Mohamed Assaf and One Direction are in the running for a for Best World Wide Act at this year’s MTV European Music Awards (EMA) held in Glasgow on November 9. Both join a list including Aussie pop-rockers 5 Seconds of Summer, the American girl group Fifth Harmony and Italian soul singer Alessandra Amoroso. Assaf’s road to the EMA’s had him first taking out the Best Middle East Act award last week, beating out competition from fellow regional nominees Jana, Cairokee, Saad Lamjarred and Imar Bassad.
The latest development caps off another big week for the 23-year-old. On Wednesday he made a special appearance in Abu Dhabi’s The Galleria mall as part of the relaunch of Platinum Records.
He joined fellow label mates Ramy Ayash, Ziad Khoury Hala Turk, Dounia Batma, Carmen Sleiman and Jameela for a special musical performance where he sang his latest single Aywah Haghani to the invite only crowd.
The 2014 MTV EMA, hosted by American hip-hop star Nicki Minaj, will be broadcast live on Monday at 2am UAE time. Fans can vote for their favourite artists in all other categories until November 8. For details go to www.mtvema.com
