Hussein Al Jasmi and Amr Diab: Arab pop shines on Yas Island For the first time an all-Arab concert was held as part of the After Race concerts. For the Thursday event, the big guns were called: the UAE’s Hussein Al Jasmi, the Egyptian superstar Amr Diab and Lebanon’s Elissa. It was a fine evening, with Al Jasmi acknowledging the international crowd before performing the old Fairuz classic Ya Hawa. Satish Kumar / The National
Timbaland: all is forgiven The superstar producer recently left a bad taste in the mouths of UAE fans. His performance at September’s Dubai Music Week can most charitably be described as not one his best. But returning as Jay Z’s special guest on Friday, Timba put on a fine show including the creation of thumping rhythms from scratch on his trusty beat machine. Ian Gavan / Getty Images for Gucci
O1NE Yas Island: open for business Abu Dhabi’s premiere clubbing destination was launched during the Grand Prix weekend. O1NE Yas Island opened its doors on Thursday night with special performances featuring Ciara and Ludacris. Fans of Skybar Beirut would have appreciated the circular seating design, with the stage placed in the middle. Look out for more big-name acts to appear at the superclub soon. Depeche Mode: current vital The British legends proved they were no nostalgia act. Their du Arena concert on Sunday showed that the latest tracks from their new album Delta Machine mixed well with their classic material. It’s also refreshing to see old rockers still performing their classic hits with gusto, as in the ripping take of Just Can’t Get Enough. Antonie Robertson / The National
Muse: bigger and better A band who prove there is nothing wrong with ambition. The British trio returned to the UAE backed with bombastic tunes and their trademark cutting-edge light show. They left the stage having won a new legion of fans. Delores Johnson / The National
Jay Z: still one of the best His musical output may have been lazy over the past few years but the superstar silenced the doubters with a frantic set on Friday. With Eminem and now Jay Z delivering successful performances, let’s hope that hip-hop becomes a mainstay of the After Race concerts. Delores Johnson / The National
Far East Movement: partying it up at Amber Lounge While it maybe one of the most exclusive shindigs in town, the Amber Lounge glitterati were not averse to getting down. The Los Angeles hip-hop crew Far East Movement kept the crowd moving with an energetic race-day set that went on late into the night. Courtesy: Amber Lounge
The Flash VIP Lounge: free BlackBerries anyone? Located in Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, the Flash VIP Lounge showered artists and celebrities from Diego Maradona to Muse and Sean Kingston with free goodies including Police watches, Bil Arabi jewellery and the latest BlackBerries. The Lebanese songstress Elissa went to the lounge directly after her performance on Thursday night. Courtesy: Lumin
Mohammad Assaf: Abu Dhabi loves you The Arab Idol winner commanded the biggest audience of this year’s Beats on the Beach concerts on the Corniche. The Palestinian crooner wowed 15,000 people, playing a smattering of Arab pop covers. Enough with the classics – we now need Mo to come back with some new tunes.
