Home improvements: Step up with your stairs

No space in the home should be neglected, no matter what design challenges it might present at first glance. For example, staircases should be a focal point, because they’re a central part of the structure.

Despite this, staircases are often overlooked as merely a thoroughfare, without thought being given to the design of what is a functionally and aesthetically significant space. Adding a colourful runner, seating and framed artwork maximises an otherwise unused space, transforming it into a sociable and informal meeting place.

I often find myself chatting and laughing with my children on the staircase outside our rooms. It’s important for it to feel vibrant and welcoming, so it keeps the energy flowing throughout the house. That’s why I always favour a bright and colourful runner, which we can all appreciate. It encourages us to spend more time appreciating our home.

Create and hang family artwork in a gallery-type style on the walls to create a talking point and encourage family and friends to spend time in these areas.
