The Fate of the Furious set to break box office records

The Fate of the Furious, looks set to break records across the globe after its release this weekend. Variety.com reports that although the final numbers have yet to be released, based on earlier estimates, the action-thriller is poised to set a new worldwide high. It is expected to pass the previous record of $529 million (Dh1.9 billion) set by Star Wars: The Force Awakens. If that happens, a large part of the credit will be due to China, where The Fate of the Furious has already racked up a massive $135 million in its first two days of release. In the US however, things have been less meteoric. The film took in an estimated $100.2 million, which is still high but much less than Furious 7's $147.2 million kick-off. Heading into the weekend, most analysts expected the film would roar past the $100 million mark, instead of inch over the line. — Reuters
