  • Eyes front. Think cycling eyewear, think Oakley. The brand’s iconic wrap-around lenses have been given a makeover this season and the iridescent peacock colours are a must-have. Our pick is the Radarlock model with the nifty switchlock technology which makes changing lenses on the move – for different weather conditions – a breeze. The high nosebridge on these glasses provides a larger forward viewing field and the extended sweep of the arms maximises peripheral vision. As if that wasn’t enough, Oakley has made them sweat-resistant for riders and added adjustable ear socks and nose pads. Don’t leave home without them and don’t leave them lying around at Dh1,577 a pair. www.oakley.com. Courtesy Oakley

  • Well-handled. While helmets and sweatbands might not be the most becoming of apparel to cycle to work in, what’s to stop you accessorising with designer accoutrements? Pay homage to fingerless-glove fan Karl Lagerfeld in a classic black lambskin quilted pair or delicate white leather and lace ones from Chanel’s Cruise 2014/15 collection. The season’s gloves are embellished simply with the luxury maison’s trademark CC signature hardware and are priced at Dh3,970. • Pump action. Snazzy sneakers are called for when pounding the pedals to work and Puma has new designs for men and women. FAQ

What is #cycletoworkuae?

As part of The National’s #healthyliving campaign we are encouraging everyone to join us in cycling to work on Tuesday, January 13.

Do I need to sign up?

No. You simply cycle from your home to your work and back. Tell the world you are participating by using the hashtag #cycletoworkuae.

How safe is it?

The UAE is still in the process of becoming cycle-friendly. Just as pedestrians must never assume they have the right of way, so must cyclists be cautious of vehicles. Using the hard shoulder, service roads and walkways is encouraged. And of course, always wear a helmet and reflectors, plus lights at night.

What can I do if I live really far from my work?

We will have two park-and-cycle locations. One is at the entrance of Khalifa Park and the other will be announced shortly.

I don’t have a bicycle. Can I still participate?

We will have a limited number of bicycles at our park-and-cycle locations that participants are welcome to use. It is also a great time to buy a bike in this weather. Look for the 20 per cent off voucher for Tamreen Sports in our paper every day until January 13.
