The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science is suing an auctioning company over an Oscar sold under the hammer.
The organisation behind the Oscar ceremony is taking the American based Briarbrook Auction Services to court over its June 24 sale of a 1948 statuette for $79,200(Dh290,890).
Through the legal proceedings the academy is aiming to purchase back the Oscar for $10 (Dh36).
The statuette in question was awarded of Joseph Wright for his art direction in My Gal Sal, a film staring Rita Hayworth.
The move by the academy is in line with its 1951 rule banning heirs from selling Oscars.
It is up to the courts now to decide if that rule applies for a statuette predating the regulation.
