Steve Carell will star in a new Netflix series inspired by Donald Trump’s announcement last year that “a sixth branch”, a Space Force, would be added to the US military.
The comedy series, titled Space Force, will be co-created by Carell and Greg Daniels, the man behind the American version of The Office, and will follow the team tasked with carrying out Trump's demands.
A short trailer has been released by Netflix, stating that “the goal of the new branch is ‘to defend satellites from attack’ and ‘perform other space-related tasks’… or something.
“This is the story of the men and women who have to figure it out.”
When Trump announced the new Space Force last year, he said: “Our destiny beyond the Earth is not only a matter of national identity but a matter of national security.
“When it comes to defending America, it is not enough to merely have an American presence in space; we must have American dominance in space. So important.”
It is understood that the scripts for Space Force have not yet been written and the number of episodes are still to be determined.
The Hollywood Reporter has cited sources claiming that Carell's salary could exceed $1 million (Dh3.7 million) an episode. Carell also signed a deal with Apple in October to star in a two-season comedy about a morning television show, alongside Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon.
