Poetry and music is centre stage at the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair on Sunday night. Below are three sessions dedicated to lovers of word and melody.
The Influence of Folk Poetry in Emirati Song
(Majlis Al Mutanabbi, 6.30pm to 8.30pm)
Emirati scholar Moayad Al Shaibani will discuss his recently published book Jaber Jassim: A Journey into Words and Melody. The work is an academic study of Emirati songs over the past 50 years. Joining him is local composer Eid Al Farag who will talk about the effect of Emirati dialects on UAE poetry.
Sounds from the Land of the Sami — A Musical Discovery
(Discussion Sofa, 7.30pm to 8.30pm)
Swedish singer Sofia Jannok hails from the Sami People, Scandanaiva’s indigenous community which stretches back to the 11th century. She will perform a selection songs from her three albums that mixes ethereal sounds with pop melodies. Jannok also performs a free show on Tuesday at the Paris-Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi Auditiorium on Tuesday, 7pm.
Lebanese Music from Yesteryear to Nowadays
(The Tent, 8.30pm to 9.30pm)
Charbel Rouhana is a leading oud player and composer in his native Lebanon. He will discuss his colourful career and highlight the many musical and social elements influencing Lebanese music today.
