Yorgos Lanthimos's multi-Oscar nominated film The Favourite has had its UAE release postponed ahead of this year's Oscars ceremony on Sunday.

The British period piece, which has picked up 10 Oscar nominations including the coveted Best Film, Best Director, and Best Actress categories, was originally scheduled to be released on February 21.

A spokesperson for Fox, the movie’s distributors, said it was still to decide whether or not to release the movie.

The spokesperson was unable to give specific information, however, given the movie’s adult themes it seems likely that significant cuts may be required to achieve a UAE-wide cinema release.

The Favourite is the only film nominated for the Best Picture Oscar that is yet to screen in the UAE this year, and has already gathered several awards from the Baftas, Golden Globes, and more.
