Set in fascist Italy, the animated film aims to explore the original 1883 book's themes in a darker manner
"We wanted to show the chaotic, liberating spirit of this little puppet, who is loving but irresponsible and is instinctively rebellious against all corruption," says co-writer Matthew Robbins
The all-star vocal cast includes David Bradley as Geppetto and Ewan McGregor as Sebastian Cricket, with Christoph Waltz, Tilda Swinton, Ron Perlman, Finn Wolfhard and Cate Blanchett
Robbins has worked regularly with del Toro since 1997’s Mimic
'Guillermo is a never-ending source of ideas and fun. He’s very fertile. He’s well-read. Has a wonderful memory for everything,' says Robbins
Although the Netflix release comes two months after Robert Zemeckis's poorly received live action adaptation, Robbins isn't worried about comparisons
Robbins believes that his and del Toro’s Pinocchio explores 'finding love and understanding in a corrupt world'
'I hope audiences will appreciate how different it is, from what could have been familiar territory'
