US investigators are treating a shooting at a naval air base in Texas as “terrorism-related", the FBI said on Thursday.

The attack, which took place early on Thursday morning in Corpus Christi, left a US sailor with minor injuries.

The attacker was killed as he tried to rush into the gate.

”We have determined that the incident this morning at the naval air station in Corpus Christi is terrorism-related," FBI senior supervisory Special Agent Leah Greeves said.

Agents were working alongside local, state and federal police on the “fluid and evolving” investigation, Ms Greeves said, hinting at a second suspect who remains at large.

"We may have a potential second related person of interest at large in the community,” she said.

The base remains under lockdown, and the FBI is advising the community to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity.

"Electronic media" was recovered at the scene, Justice Department spokeswoman Kerri Kupec said.

The department is working with counter-terrorism authorities to “expeditiously investigate the circumstances of this event and all available evidence", Ms Kupec said.

The injured sailor has been released from hospital but no further information was provided on the attacker.
