SHARJAH // A woman has been jailed by a Sharjah court for aborting her pregnancy and having sex outside of wedlock.
The married Indonesian woman was charged with having an affair with a Pakistani man, who was also on trial, then aborting the four-month-old fetus and burying it in a Sharjah garden.
The Pakistani was also charged with extramarital sex, while another woman was charged with aiding and abetting by providing the woman with drugs and teaching her how to use them.
During interrogations, the Indonesian woman said she got pregnant from the affair and, in April this year, decided to abort the fetus, fearing a scandal.
She told prosecutors she bought the drugs because she could not deliver the baby in the UAE or travel back home to her husband.
A DNA report concluded that the fetus belonged to the couple.
The three defendants had denied the charges at an earlier court hearing. However, Sharjah Criminal Court sentenced each of them to six months in jail, while the Indonesian woman was also fined Dh3,000.
They will be deported after completing their sentences.
