All traffic signals in Dubai will soon be remotely controlled via 3G technology.
The move is set to better manage congestion at junctions by controlling signals in realtime from the Traffic Control Centre according to changing traffic patterns.
“This innovative project will boost the global profile of Dubai, particularly as the system is applied for the first time worldwide,” said Maitha bin Udai, chief executive of RTA Traffic and Roads Agency.
The RTA has finalised surveying more than 800 junctions that will benefit from the new technology.
“The system has a host of benefits such as its effectiveness, smooth implementation and link with the control centre, easy maintenance and the low-cost compared to the previous scenario, where an infrastructure of cables and lines from service providers are required near each signal,” Mr bin Udai said.
As of last month, about 330 junctions were controlled by the RTA using the new technology. The rest will be linked by the end of March.
