Fog-related road accidents



* March 11, 2008: More than 200 cars crashed in the morning rush hour on Sheikh Zayed Road, near Ghantoot on what became known as Fog Tuesday. Four people died, 350 were injured and 20 cars burst into flames.

* March 8, 2009: Fifty-four labourers and a driver were injured when their bus crashed into an outdoor advertising billboard on the outskirts of Ras Al Khaimah amid heavy morning fog which reduced visibility.

* April 2, 2011: A speeding motorist who failed to slow down in fog caused a 127-car pile-up on the E11 motorway near Al Samha that left one person dead and more than 60 injured.

* October 18, 2011: Speeding drivers caused a 32-car pile-up on the Dubai Bypass Road just before the Al Ain highway interchange as heavy fog blanketed the emirate.

* December 26, 2011: Ten people were hurt in road accidents in Abu Dhabi, including an Arab woman who was severely injured. The crashes happened in heavy fog on the E11 motorway near Al Smeih bridge.

* February 29, 2012: An Asian woman was killed after a car hit her on Corniche Road. An Asian lorry driver was killed after a crash near to Emirates Roundabout in Abu Dhabi in two fog-related traffic accidents.

* February 10, 2013: A 20-year-old Emirati woman was killed after a bus and lorry collided in Al Ain's Al Arrad region amid thick morning fog. Six other female Emiratis, aged between 17 and 20, were injured in the crash, as was the Pakistani bus driver.

* May 12, 2013: Dense fog caused 140 crashes in the space of six hours in Dubai. Motorists placed 900 phone calls to the police central operations room as fog rolled into the UAE between 3am and 9am.

* December 24, 2008: Two people were killed and several more injured in five separate accidents as motorists drove in thick fog. One motorist died and five were injured in Abu Dhabi while an Emirati motorcyclist died hours after hitting a kerb and lamppost on Al Rabat road in Dubai.

* December 3, 2013: An Arab man, 34, who failed to see an oncoming vehicle because of the fog, died instantly in Ras Al Khaimah. The driver of the other vehicle, an Emirati, 60, suffered minor injuries, as did his passenger, another Arab, 37.

* January 24, 2014: Heavy fog on the E11 motorway caused multiple crashes involving at least 50 cars. The largest pile-up, involving about 30 vehicles, was spread over a kilometre of road near the service station close to Kizad.

* January 16, 2014: At least 14 people were injured in a 57-car pile-up on both sides of the motorway between Abu Dhabi and Al Ain after a thick fog suddenly descended.
