DUBAI // A trial phase of a smart system to detect exhaustion signals in bus drivers has shown an 88 per cent drop in such reported cases, according to Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority.

The Al Raqeeb System involved fitting a device in front of the bus driver to monitor any indicators of fatigue or illness. The state of the driver’s health is transmitted to the RTA’s control room, where any problem cases can be dealt with immediately.

The trial phase involved 50 buses and plans are under way to extend it to the RTA’s fleet of more than 1,500 buses operated by more than 3,000 drivers. The RTA is also experimenting with another smart system that monitors the bus driver’s driving habits to ensure they are complying with safe practices.
