ABU DHABI // A total of 4,775 motorists were penalised last year for driving at speeds in excess of 200 kph.

Brig Hussein Al Harithi, director of traffic police, said driving at high speeds can cause “horrifying traffic accidents that often lead to fatalities and serious injuries”.

The penalties for exceeding the speed limit by more than 60 kph is vehicle impoundment for more than a month, 12 black points and a Dh1,000 fine.

Brig Al Harithi added that more than 10,000 drivers had benefited from awareness programmes and lectures during the last year.

“These programmes and lectures aim to enhance the levels of adherence to fixed speeds limits that have been designated on the signage alongside roads,” he said.
