SHARJAH // Police have arrested more than 6,600 illegal residents, runaway maids, beggars and street vendors since January.
Between January 1 and May 18, a total of 6,698 individuals were arrested as part of 271 inspection raids on illegal activities. Of the arrests, 1,652 were women, said Lt Col Salem Harimal, head of the Residency Violations Department at Sharjah Police.
“One thousand, five hundred and seventy six were found to be in violation of the residency law, while 1,062 have ran away from their sponsors. The rest were divided between beggars and unauthorised street vendors,” said the officer.
Last year, more than 12,021 were arrested during the first 11 months in a similar raids in Sharjah.
Lt Col Harimal called on the public to report any illegals living in their neighbourhood on the toll-free number 800151.
