Sharjah police launch initiative to curb crime

SHARJAH // Sharjah Police have launched a programme designed to curb annual crime rates in the emirate by 10 per cent.

Speaking on Sunday at an event to announce the initiative Maj Gen Humaid Mohammed Al Hudaidi, chief of Sharjah Police, said it aimed to prevent crimes by spreading awareness.

According to Al Ittihad, The National’s sister publication, Maj Gen Humaid said the programme will focus on 16 crimes classified as “disturbing” including drugs cases, thefts, assaults, reckless driving and home injuries.

He said that the crime rate was down 10.7 per cent in the emirate in the first half of the year compared to the same period last year.

Home burglaries dropped 32 per cent between 2010 to 2013, theft of vehicles by 37.5 per cent, kidnapping by 76 per cent, and human trafficking by 6.8 per cent, according to Maj Gen Humaid.
