DUBAI // A jobless American took Dh500 from a woman after claiming he was a senior employee at Dubai Media Incorporated who wanted to hire her, a court heard on Thursday.

The 28-year-old defendant forged a work contract and a receipt, which he claimed were issued by Dubai Media Incorporated and told the woman he worked there and could help her get a job.

The woman, whose age and nationality were not given, approached the company on June 1 and said she received a job offer from them.

A 36-year-old Emirati manager at DMI said: “When I spoke to her she told me that an American senior employee at our company sent her the offer. She showed me some documents carrying our logo that the defendant sent her and, when I compared them to ours, they turned out to be fake.”

The manager said the woman told him she had paid the defendant money, which he told her was a hiring fee.

“We don’t take fees on recruitment,” said the manager, adding that he contacted police and reported the incident.

The accused confessed to charges of forgery, use of forged documents and unlawfully obtaining Dh500 from his victim.

Dubai Criminal Court said it will deliver a decision later on Thursday.
