Man charged over supplying drugs that led girlfriend to overdose

DUBAI // A jobless Emirati gave his girlfriend the drugs that killed her, a court has been told.

The defendant, 33, denied charges of facilitating drugs and consuming drugs, but confessed to possessing drugs for personal use at Dubai Criminal Court.

On August 12, police received a report of a woman’s body left at the entrance of a hospital in Al Mankhoul.

“The forensic expert told us she was dead and there were injection marks on her left arm,” said a police officer, 26.

Security footage showed a white vehicle dropping off the woman, 25, before driving away.

“He was arrested near his home in Al Quoz and during questioning he told us the woman’s identity,” the officer said.

“He said they had been together for two days and at night they would sleep in the car because he had no cash to rent a hotel room.”

The policeman said the man denied giving the woman drugs. He said she had her own prescription.

He claimed he grew worried after she fainted so he dropped her at the hospital, the officer said.

The next hearing at the Dubai Criminal Court was scheduled for November 27.

UAE's role in anti-extremism recognised

General John Allen, President of the Brookings Institution research group, commended the role the UAE has played in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism.

He told a Globsec debate of the UAE’s "hugely outsized" role in the fight against Isis.

"It’s trite these days to say that any country punches above its weight, but in every possible way the Emirates did, both militarily, and very importantly, the UAE was extraordinarily helpful on getting to the issue of violent extremism," he said.

He also noted the impact that Hedayah, among others in the UAE, has played in addressing violent extremism.
