Man accused of stealing electronics and cash worth more than Dh2 million, Dubai court hears

DUBAI // A man stole more than Dh1 million worth of smartphones and Dh500,000 in cash from an electronics shop, Dubai Criminal Court heard.

The 28-year-old Afghan expatriate was one of several men who raided the shop in Naif, Deira, on the night of May 28 last year and stole 11 boxes containing iPhones, Samsung smartphones and iPads worth Dh1.6m, prosecutors say.

The following morning the shop’s cleaner found the door lock broken and the boxes missing, and alerted his boss, the sales manager.

The sales manager said: “When he called me at nearly 10.30am, I rushed to the place and called the manager and, upon the manager’s arrival, police were called.”

Police found that the thieves had cut off the surveillance cameras as they entered the shop.

“I had kept nearly Dh700,000 in the drawer before I closed the shop and left home at almost midnight, before the theft took place,” the sales manager said.

The accused was not in court on Tuesday to answer charges of theft and damaging property The next hearing is on January 25.
