DUBAI // A global summit in Dubai next month will include forums on happiness, climate change and food security, and Arab youth.

The World Government Summit will be held from February 12 to 14 under the patronage of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai.

Mohammed Al Gergawi, Minister of Cabinet Affairs and the Future, described the summit as dedicated to shaping the future and dealing proactively with the world’s most pressing challenges.

“The vision of the UAE leadership, based on shaping the future as a foundation for advancing government work, has made [the summit] one of the most important international futurism platforms,” said Mr Al Gergawi, who is also the summit’s chairman.

“Furthermore, it has enhanced the country’s position as a top global destination for industry leaders and specialists that define the future of government work.”

About 150 countries are expected to participate in the summit, which has collaborations with the United Nations, World Bank, World Economic Forum and OECD.

The International Monetary Fund and the Latin American Centre for Development Administration are also participating this year.

Japan has been named as the summit’s guest of honour for its work in government innovation, organisers said.

During a dialogue about the summit on Thursday, Mr Al Gergawi said a competition called the Government Techioneers Race will be launched at the summit, with awards in three categories: Virtual Governments Hackathon Award, Best Government Service on Mobile Phones and Best Emerging Technology for Governments.

Also this year, criteria for the Best Minister in the World Award are more stringent, considering statistics showing the influence of nominees on people’s lives and their successes, reputation, transparency and integrity, organisers said.

Australian environment minister Greg Hunt received the award at last year's summit for creativity and impact of his projects.

The Global Dialogue on Happiness will be held before the summit, with more than 300 experts participating, said Ohood Al Roumi, Minister of State for Happiness. It will involve discussion on how government can bring people happiness rather than only satisfaction.

“Workshops and panel discussions will result in a guide booklet for government work to successfully raise the standard of happiness around the world,” she said.

The Arab Youth Forum at the summit will include panel discussions with representatives from the World Bank, LinkedIn and telecommunications company du.
