The UAE has sent a plane carrying 16 metric tonnes of medical supplies to Iran to bolster efforts to curb the spread of Covid-19.

The aid will assist about 16,000 medical professionals in the country.

It is the fourth time the UAE has sent aid to Iran as the Emirates remains committed to the fight against the pandemic.

On March 16, the UAE sent two planes to Iran carrying more than 33 tonnes of medical supplies to Iran, followed by another aircraft on March 3 containing 7.5 tonnes of aid in co-operation with the World Health Organisation.

“The UAE hopes that these supplies will enhance the capacity of medical staff in Iran and provide them with greater protection,” said Saif Al Zaabi, UAE ambassador to Iran.

“The UAE has long stood with the leadership and peoples of other countries in difficult times, supporting them and helping save their lives without regard to any other considerations.”

Yesterday, the UAE also sent a plane containing 15 tonnes of medical and food aid to the Amazon, in collaboration with the Vatican Department of Education.

The Emirates has sent about 1,000 tonnes of medical supplies to countries in South America, Asia, Africa and Europe to help them fight the pandemic.

In the past few months, the UAE has sent thousands of protective gowns, gloves and face masks to health workers across the world.
