ABU DHABI // Indian swimmer Amar Muralidharan will on Friday become the first sportsman to appeal against a drugs ban at the Abu Dhabi branch of the International Sports Court.

The swimmer is appealing against the decision of the Indian national anti-steroids committee in New Delhi to convict him of using banned substances and suspend him for two years.

The court has assigned an independent arbitrator, Michali Bernesconi, from Switzerland, to manage the trial.

Muralidharan, his two lawyers and his father will be attending the hearing.

The regional base for the International Court of Arbitration for Sport will open in the capital following a decision by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs, in May 2012, which makes it the first international sports arbitration court outside Switzerland.
