SHARJAH // Homes and businesses were left without power for more than two hours on Monday morning after fire badly damaged a substation.
Sharjah Civil Defence said the blaze began at 7.40am in the Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (Sewa) substation in King Faisal Street.
It caused signigicant tailbacks during the morning rush hour. Power supplies were restored by 10am, said an official at Sewa.
Colonel Sami Al Naqbi, director of Sharjah Civil Defence, said emergency teams went to the scene and contained the blaze by 8.45am.
There were no reports of casualties. The site was then cooled with water and handed over to a forensic team to determine the cause of the fire.
Also on Monday, a massive fire erupted in warehouses and shops in Industrial Area 4 in Sharjah.
Civil defence crews were dispatched to the location at 2.45pm and contained the fire before it spread to nearby buildings.
