DUBAI // A British housewife has accused a grocery shop delivery worker of trying to rape her in her garden.
The 35-year-old woman told prosecutors that on May 31 she ordered some items from the nearby shop and, when the man arrived, she allowed him into the garden.
“I took the items and paid him but he didn’t leave. He walked towards me then threw me down and tried to kiss and touch me,” said the housewife.
She resisted him as he tried to touch her, she said, then screamed at him threatening to call police.
“He then left,” she said, after which she called her husband, who contacted police.
The officer who was sent to the woman’s house said she had been drinking alcohol when he told her about the incident.
“Then I went to the grocery shop and questioned the suspect. He denied her story and said that she offered him alcohol and he refused, so she fabricated the story,” said the officer, 32.
However, a forensic report confirmed that traces of the defendant’s DNA were found on the woman’s neck. It concluded that there must have been direct contact between the two for the DNA to be there.
The suspect denied a sex assault charge at Dubai Criminal Court.
A verdict is expected on December 14.

Ads on social media can 'normalise' drugs
A UK report on youth social media habits commissioned by advocacy group Volteface found a quarter of young people were exposed to illegal drug dealers on social media.
The poll of 2,006 people aged 16-24 assessed their exposure to drug dealers online in a nationally representative survey.
Of those admitting to seeing drugs for sale online, 56 per cent saw them advertised on Snapchat, 55 per cent on Instagram and 47 per cent on Facebook.
Cannabis was the drug most pushed by online dealers, with 63 per cent of survey respondents claiming to have seen adverts on social media for the drug, followed by cocaine (26 per cent) and MDMA/ecstasy, with 24 per cent of people.

Coffee: black death or elixir of life?
It is among the greatest health debates of our time; splashed across newspapers with contradicting headlines - is coffee good for you or not?
Depending on what you read, it is either a cancer-causing, sleep-depriving, stomach ulcer-inducing black death or the secret to long life, cutting the chance of stroke, diabetes and cancer.
The latest research - a study of 8,412 people across the UK who each underwent an MRI heart scan - is intended to put to bed (caffeine allowing) conflicting reports of the pros and cons of consumption.
The study, funded by the British Heart Foundation, contradicted previous findings that it stiffens arteries, putting pressure on the heart and increasing the likelihood of a heart attack or stroke, leading to warnings to cut down.
Numerous studies have recognised the benefits of coffee in cutting oral and esophageal cancer, the risk of a stroke and cirrhosis of the liver.
The benefits are often linked to biologically active compounds including caffeine, flavonoids, lignans, and other polyphenols, which benefit the body. These and othetr coffee compounds regulate genes involved in DNA repair, have anti-inflammatory properties and are associated with lower risk of insulin resistance, which is linked to type-2 diabetes.
But as doctors warn, too much of anything is inadvisable. The British Heart Foundation found the heaviest coffee drinkers in the study were most likely to be men who smoked and drank alcohol regularly.
Excessive amounts of coffee also unsettle the stomach causing or contributing to stomach ulcers. It also stains the teeth over time, hampers absorption of minerals and vitamins like zinc and iron.
It also raises blood pressure, which is largely problematic for people with existing conditions.
So the heaviest drinkers of the black stuff - some in the study had up to 25 cups per day - may want to rein it in.
