DUBAI // Two lorry drivers will spend 10 years in jail after they were caught with more than 4 kilograms of heroin that they intended to sell.

A police officer told Dubai Criminal Court that in May the two Pakistanis, aged 35 and 28, were looking for a driver to carry the drugs to Kuwait in return for Dh48,000.

“I was assigned to pose as a truck driver and contacted one of the defendants,” the officer said. “When I met with him at the fruit and vegetables market I asked him if the drugs belonged to him,” the officer said.

“He said they belonged to a man in Pakistan and that his role was to store them and help ship them to Kuwait.”

The man in Pakistan later called to say that once he crossed the border into Kuwait a man would arrive to pick up the drugs.

The officer arranged to meet the defendant two days later to take the drugs. When he arrived with the other lorry driver, both were arrested with the drugs in their vehicle.

A medical report confirmed the two had taken morphine. They admitted charges of possession and use of drugs and were also fined Dh50,000 each.

They will be deported after completing their terms.
