DUBAI // A jobless man and his girlfriend have been convicted of taking drugs and having sex outside of wedlock.
Pakistani A A, 34, was sentenced to five years in prison and fined Dh20,000 for possessing 7.2 grammes of heroin and 7.8g of amphetamine and for having sex with his 27-year-old Tajik girlfriend, M H.
The couple were arrested at a hotel room in Naif in December last year. They confessed to consuming drugs and having consensual sex outside of marriage, but A A denied giving M H drugs.
M H was sentenced to four years in jail.
Policeman K A, testified that officers were tipped off that the couple were using drugs in the hotel room.
“On December 27 last year we went to the Diplomat Hotel where the two were staying,” said K A, adding that after knocking at the door and identifying themselves, M H stalled officers for about five minutes before she let them in.
“When we got in, the window was open and as we looked down a bag was on the street just below the window. The bag contained drugs,” said K A.
A A said he threw the bag out of the window because he was scared.
The officer told the court that more drugs were found in the room, which A A said belonged to him.
The couple were referred to the criminal laboratory which, after examining them both, reported they had recently consumed drugs and had intercourse.
Both of them will be deported after serving their sentences.
