ABU DHABI // The Statistics Centre Abu Dhabi has reported an increase in the price of fish and other seafood, vegetables and meat during the third week of Ramadan.
Comparing week three with week two of Ramadan, the report shows that fish and seafood prices increased by 3.9 per cent in Abu Dhabi.
The largest changes were in the price of fresh hammour, up 10.3 per cent, in gabab (yellowfin tuna), with a rise of 7.9 per cent, and fresh kan’ad (kingfish), by 6.3 per cent.
The price of vegetables in Abu Dhabi also increased – by 2.4 per cent. This was driven by tomatoes rising 6.7 per cent, cucumbers 5.7 per cent and green peppers 18.5 per cent.
Meat prices increased by 1.3 per cent, although they were slightly down, by 0.2 per cent, in Al Ain and remained stable in the Western Region. The largest factor in the rise in meat prices in Abu Dhabi was in the price of Australian mutton with bone, which was up 9.1 per cent, followed by Brazilian boneless beef, up 6.5 per cent, and Australian boneless beef, up 4.3 per cent.
In the third week of Ramadan, fruit prices rose 0.8 per cent on average in Abu Dhabi emirate, reflecting rises of 0.5 per cent in Abu Dhabi city, 1 per cent in Al Ain and 1.5 per cent in the Western Region.
Watermelons were up by 7.8 per cent and kiwi fruit by 11.8 per cent.
The centre releases weekly reports on food prices during the holy month to monitor any changes, and May prices are used as a baseline.
The data helps government authorities to monitor food prices and ensures a sufficient supply of consumer goods during Ramadan.
