Hosted by the Durham Miners' Association since 1871 the 139th Durham Miners' Gala, also known as The Big Meeting returns this year. For more than a century, the Gala was funded by the working miners of the Durham coalfields but following the closure of the collieries it is now funded by donation and subscription through the Friends of Durham Miners' Gala. The gala brings together the communal values, culture and mining heritage of the North east of England with over 200,000 people expected to attend the event to listen to the brass bands, the speeches and to socialise and show their allegiance to the banners from former colliery villages throughout the North.
