Jordan
Khaled has been a journalist for 25 years, mostly with Reuters in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and London. He covered the outbreak of Arab uprisings in Yemen and Syria, Hafez Al Assad's rule, Iraq under Saddam Hussein and was war correspondent in Baghdad during the 2003 US invasion. He joined The National as Chief Foreign Writer in 2019 before moving to Amman. He was a Visiting Fellow for more than three years at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs in Berlin.

RIYADH, 12th January, 2024 (WAM) -- H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, participated in the "Riyadh Ministerial Meetings on Syria", which kicked off today in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. These meetings are a continuation of the "Aqaba Meetings" on Syria, which were held in Aqaba, Jordan, on 14th December 2024. His Highness participated in the expanded international ministerial meeting on Syria, which was held in Riyadh and discussed the overall developments in the Syrian Arab Republic and ways to enhance regional and international efforts to ensure Syria's unity, territorial integrity, sovereignty, and the security and stability of its people. The meeting was attended by His Highness Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the sisterly Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the sisterly State of Qatar, His Excellency Ayman Safadi, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of the sisterly Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, His Excellency Fuad Hussein, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the sisterly State of Iraq, His Excellency Abdullah Bou Habib, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the sisterly Republic of Lebanon, His Excellency Asaad Al-Shaibani, Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Syrian Transitional Government, His Excellency Dr. Badr Abdel Aati, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration of the sisterly Arab Republic of Egypt, His Excellency Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al-Busaidi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the sisterly Sultanate of Oman, His Excellency Abdullatif bin Rashid Al-Zayani, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the sisterly Kingdom of Bahrain, His Excellency Jassim Mohammed Al-Badawi, Secretary-General of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf, and His Excellency Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States. The meeting also included a number of foreign ministers of friendly countries and international officials, including Anne-Claire Léandre, Advisor to the French President for North Africa and the Middle East; Annalena Baerbock, Foreign Minister of the Federal Republic of Germany; Hakan Fidan, Foreign Minister of the Republic of Turkey; David Lammy, Minister of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs of the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland; John Bass, Acting Under-Secretary of State for Political Affairs of the United States of America; Maria Tripodi, Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs of Italy; Diego Martinez Bebelo, Minister of State for Foreign and Global Affairs of Spain; Kaya Kallas, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy; and Geir Pedersen, Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for Syria. His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan pointed out that this expanded ministerial meeting embodies the importance of combining regional, international and UN efforts to support the brotherly Syrian people at all levels in a way that meets their legitimate aspirations for sustainable security, stability, prosperity and development. His Highness also reiterated the UAE's firm position in supporting Syria's independence and sovereignty over all its territories, pointing out the importance of the solidarity and cohesion of the brotherly Syrian people in all their spectrums in order to build a unified, stable and secure Syria in which there is no terrorism or exclusion. His Highness praised the efforts of Geir Pedersen, the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy to Syria, noting the importance of providing all forms of support and assistance to the UN envoy to lead to a comprehensive and inclusive political process that achieves the hopes of the brotherly Syrian people for security, development and a decent life. His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan expressed his thanks and appreciation to the sisterly Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for hosting the important ministerial meeting and to all participating sisterly and friendly countries.
