It was the very reason both these superstar footballers were recruited by New York City FC in the first place. David Villa, the former Spain striker, has been a prolific finisher his entire career, while Italian midfielder Andrea Pirlo is the very definition of a goal-creator. So it was no surprise when the two players combined for New York City’s second goal against Orlando FC on Sunday evening in a move that encapsulated both of their qualities. Pirlo, who pulled the midfield strings of AC Milan, Juventus and Italy, spots Villa making a dart run when he clips the ball into the Spaniard’s path. Former Barcelona and Valencia striker Villa then takes a touch to control, and lofts the ball over the Orlando goalkeeper to hand New York City a 2-0 lead. Unfortunately for New York City and Villa, who missed a penalty that would have made it 3-0, Orlando fought their way back into the match to earn a 2-2 draw. Yet, Villa’s goal was the major highlight of the match, at least from the neutral’s perspective. Follow us on Twitter @NatSportUAE Like us on Facebook at facebook.com/TheNationalSport
