Hamilton, 31, dominated Saturday’s qualifying, producing a fastest lap nearly half a second faster than teammate and title rival Nico Rosberg.

The Ferrari pair, Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen, qualified third and fourth respectively.

In claiming his fifth Italian Grand Prix pole position, Hamilton equalled the joint record held by Juan Manuel Fangio and Ayrton Senna for most amount of pole positions at Monza.

Hamilton, the defending and three-time world champion, leads Rosberg in the championship standings by nine points.
