While Liverpool moved to within four points of fourth place and a Uefa Champions League place with Saturday’s 1-0 victory at Sunderland, Brendan Rodgers acknowledged he was not completely satisfied.
Lazar Markovic’s ninth-minute strike proved to be the only goal of the game against their hosts, who had Liam Bridcutt sent off for two bookable offences, and Rodgers said: “Our only disappointment against Sunderland was we didn’t have the extra goals to show for our domination.
“We had good control of the game. It was important for us today. We had real good solidity.”

Elsewhere, Burnley moved out of the relegation zone at the expense of opponents Queens Park Rangers thanks to their 2-1 home victory.
Goals from Scott Arfield and Danny Ings gave Sean Dyche’s side the three points, with former Burnley forward Charlie Austin sandwiching those goals for QPR with a penalty.
The defeat consigned QPR to a league record 10th successive away loss, and goalkeeper Robert Green said: “The away record is not something you can put your finger on. We don’t go into the games any different. We’ve conceded poor goals away from home continually.”
Tony Pulis won his first league game in charge of West Bromwich Albion as Saido Berahino’s goal 12 minutes from time secured a 1-0 success over fellow strugglers Hull City.
Aston Villa failed to score for the fourth successive game as they lost 1-0 at last-place side Leicester City.
Paul Konchesky scored the only goal of a game in which both sides had a man sent off, Leicester losing Matty James to a straight red card while Ciaran Clark was dismissed for a second bookable offence.
A Mark Noble own goal denied West Ham United the three points at Swansea City as they were held to a 1-1 draw.
Andy Carroll’s individual effort had given West Ham a first-half lead, but Bafetimbi Gomis’s header in the 74th minute struck the post and rebounded off Noble and into the net to ensure the spoils were shared.
At Selhurst Park, Alan Pardew made a memorable league debut as Crystal Palace manager as his side beat London rivals Tottenham Hotspur 2-1.
Harry Kane had given Spurs the lead after 49 minutes, only for Dwight Gayle to equalise from the spot 20 minutes later and Jason Puncheon to grab the winner with 10 minutes to go.
