  Alireza Jahanbakhsh – 7: Forced good save out of Henderson with curling shot after 25 minutes. Cracked another chance over the bar minutes before United’s opener. Picked up injury that forced him off straight after break. EPA

  Viktor Gyokeres - 5: Swedish attacker made little impact and was hooked just after the hour. EPA

  Alexis Mac Allister - 7: Caused United a few problems. Beautiful lay-off to set up Jahanbakhsh chance midway through first half. Scooped a shot just over the bar after dangerous run 10 minutes before the break. Wasted free-kick in great position by shooting instead of crossing into box 10 minutes after half-time. EPA

  MANCHESTER UNITED RATINGS: Dean Henderson - 7: One quality first half save, one superb one in the second from Trossard, the man who can’t score against United. Second cup game in a week for United, second clean sheet. Doing fine. EPA

  Diogo Dalot - 6: Rare chance for the Portuguese right back. Lovely cross for Pogba to head at goal. Late chance blocked after being set up by Mata. Grew into game. AFP

Perfect ball in beyond flat back line to set up the opening goal. Then scored the second – his 50th United goal - to confirm victory, cleverly passing the ball into the net when it looked like he’d shoot with the other foot. AP

  Donny Van De Beek - 7: His agent isn’t happy that he’s a substitute in league games, but the Dutchman isn’t yet pulling up trees when he does play. Got better as the game went on. Clever flick into the path of Mata for his second goal and awareness and off the ball movement. His links with Mata troubled Brighton all night. Getty

  Odion Ighalo - 4: Excellent chance in first half, then the first United substitute. He’s different from United’s other strikers, but it’s a struggle for the Nigerian when he gets rare minutes and it’s hard to see where he’ll get more before his loan ends in January. EPA

Manchester United breezed to another victory on the south coast as they reached the Carabao Cup quarter-finals at the expense of Brighton.

In a game which lacked almost all of the drama from the Premier League meeting at the Amex Stadium four days earlier, the visitors advanced with a deserved 3-0 victory.

Juan Mata laid on the opener for Scott McTominay before adding the second himself with his 50th goal for the club.

Paul Pogba came off the bench to score late on as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side eased into the last eight.

"Another good night, I think we played good today," Mata said after the match. "We knew they would play from the back. They try to play attractive football.

"They changed the system in the game, so you have to be alert. But we created chances and had more to kill the game.

"We want to lift trophies for our fans. We want to do it again. We try to win every game. This is different this year with the early stage."

Brighton manager Graham Potter said: "It was a tight game until the second goal, or Dean Henderson's save [from Leandro Trossard] at 1-0 was key. Then they bring on [Marcus] Rashford and Pogba which made life difficult.
