England edged a thriller in Manchester

  Abid Ali – 5. Made starts in both innings without being able to convert. After his fine start in Test cricket, he might find opening in England more of a challenge. AP

  Azhar Ali – 4. Struggled with the bat, with a duck and 18, and was unable to press home the advantage when his side were in a winning position on the fourth afternoon. Getty

  Babar Azam – 7. “Bobby” batted like a prince on the opening day, and looked set for a ton, only to fall straight away on the second morning. Made just five in the second. Reuters

  Asad Shafiq – 5. Undone by Broad cheaply in the first innings, and fell to a rare run out in the second. Reuters

  Mohammed Rizwan – 8. Provided a wicketkeeping demo against the turning ball on worn wicket. Stood up to Abbas at important times, too. AFP

  Shadab Khan – 7. Picked up two quick wickets having been under-bowled in the first innings, and played a crucial hand with the bat in alliance with Masood. AFP

  Yasir Shah – 7. Unfair that he had the burden of bowling Pakistan to the win in the last innings. Could not have battled much harder, as he took eight wickets in the match. Reuters

  Mohammed Abbas – 7. It feels remarkable he only took three wickets in the match, given that he always seemed to be a threat. PA

  Shaheen Afridi – 6. Might have deserved more wickets, as he challenged both edges of the bat frequently. He needs to be mindful of the no-balls he is bowling. AP

  Naseem Shah – 6. Had a lot to live up to given all the hype pre-match. He did not exactly steal the show, but he still showed glimpses of his great promise. AFP

Chris Woakes hit an unbeaten 84 as England dug deep to defeat Pakistan by three wickets in the first Test in Manchester on Saturday.

England were struggling while chasing 277 after collapsing to 117-5 on the fourth day.

But man-of-the-match Woakes, who had helped drag England back into the contest with 2-11 in five overs on Friday, and Jos Buttler (75) helped turn the tide with a stand of 139.

There was heartbreak for Pakistan who were on top after posting 326 in the first innings and dismissing the hosts for 219 in their opening essay.
