England edged a thriller in Manchester

ENGLAND TEST RATINGS: Rory Burns – 4. Similar dismissals in either innings – lbw – might point to a deficiency, but Burns has proved himself adept at solving problems quickly so far in his Test career. Reuters

Dom Sibley – 5. Outfoxed by Mohammad Abbas’ new-ball brilliance on the first morning. Battled doggedly in the second innings, but lapsed when driving against Yasir. Getty

Joe Root – 6. England’s captain would not mind having that issue with converting 50s to tons at the moment. For now he’s struggling to turn starts into scores. Reuters

Ben Stokes – 6. A rare off game with the bat, thanks largely to two unplayable deliveries. At least he played a role with the ball in Pakistan’s second innings. AP

Ollie Pope – 7. England would have been sunk if not for his counter-attacking half-century on the second day. The ball that got him in the second innings was unplayable. AP

Jos Buttler – 7. In a huge amount of debt after twice letting off Masood while in the 40s, but he repaid that when it mattered with the bat. Reuters

Chris Woakes – 9. Deserved more than the four wickets he took with the ball, and he played the seminal hand with the bat with his last-innings 84 not out. Reuters

Dom Bess – 6. Still just sort of existing in the side. Two wickets on a pitch that favoured spin, and was also at the wicket when victory was sealed – on nought not out. AFP

Jofra Archer – 6. Three wickets in the first innings – including two in two balls – and relatively underemployed in the second. Reuters

Stuart Broad – 7. Continues to threaten with the ball, with three wickets in each innings, and another couple of important cameos with the bat, too. PA

James Anderson – 5. Just the lone wicket in the match, and he was relatively expensive by his lofty standards, too. Getty

PAKISTAN RATINGS: Shan Masood – 9. Got the fairytale return to England that he craved with a brilliant first-innings century. The fact he reached it off James Anderson will have felt all the sweeter. Getty

Abid Ali – 5. Made starts in both innings without being able to convert. After his fine start in Test cricket, he might find opening in England more of a challenge. AP

Azhar Ali – 4. Struggled with the bat, with a duck and 18, and was unable to press home the advantage when his side were in a winning position on the fourth afternoon. Getty

Babar Azam – 7. “Bobby” batted like a prince on the opening day, and looked set for a ton, only to fall straight away on the second morning. Made just five in the second. Reuters

Asad Shafiq – 5. Undone by Broad cheaply in the first innings, and fell to a rare run out in the second. Reuters

Mohammed Rizwan – 8. Provided a wicketkeeping demo against the turning ball on worn wicket. Stood up to Abbas at important times, too. AFP

Shadab Khan – 7. Picked up two quick wickets having been under-bowled in the first innings, and played a crucial hand with the bat in alliance with Masood. AFP

Yasir Shah – 7. Unfair that he had the burden of bowling Pakistan to the win in the last innings. Could not have battled much harder, as he took eight wickets in the match. Reuters

Mohammed Abbas – 7. It feels remarkable he only took three wickets in the match, given that he always seemed to be a threat. PA

Shaheen Afridi – 6. Might have deserved more wickets, as he challenged both edges of the bat frequently. He needs to be mindful of the no-balls he is bowling. AP

Naseem Shah – 6. Had a lot to live up to given all the hype pre-match. He did not exactly steal the show, but he still showed glimpses of his great promise. AFP

Chris Woakes hit an unbeaten 84 as England dug deep to defeat Pakistan by three wickets in the first Test in Manchester on Saturday.

England were struggling while chasing 277 after collapsing to 117-5 on the fourth day.

But man-of-the-match Woakes, who had helped drag England back into the contest with 2-11 in five overs on Friday, and Jos Buttler (75) helped turn the tide with a stand of 139.

There was heartbreak for Pakistan who were on top after posting 326 in the first innings and dismissing the hosts for 219 in their opening essay.
