In the early hours of March 13, 2022, streaks of light punctuated the night sky above the northern Iraqi city of Erbil as a barrage of rockets rained on a building near the old town.

The thud and blasts shook the city, orange flames rose up and thick black smoke stood out against the deep purple of the night sky.
