From textiles to books: 6 stand-alone stores that have reopened in Dubai

Since Dubai authorities eased restrictions on movement, malls are set to reopen to the public. But it's not only malls that are reopening, several stand-alone stores have also welcomed shoppers again.

While we don’t advocate going on a shopping spree at this time, if you do need to buy something and want to avoid the city’s malls, here are six stand-alone stores you can check out instead.

Many of these shops have opened with measures to keep customers apart and alternative hours, so it’s a good idea to call before you visit.

The Collective by Ripe, Al Quoz

The Courtyard in Al Quoz's boutique shopping destination will open for a soft launch on Sunday, April 26. Head down between noon and 8pm but make sure you pay attention to the physical distancing rules, such as keeping a few steps between you and other visitors, wearing a mask and gloves and not touching any products you're not sure you're going to buy, no matter how irresistible the new Ramadan collections are. www.thecollectivebyripe.com

Comptoir 102, Jumeirah

Stuffed with beautiful furniture, accessories and couture, Comptoir 102 has reopened in its quaint bungalow home on Jumeriah Beach Road. Head here for a curated selection of wares from local and international designers, or visit for health-focused organic dishes and a changing menu of daily specials. Ramadan opening hours are from 9am until 8pm daily. If you prefer to stay at home, the cafe is also open for deliveries, www.comptoir102.com

Magrudy’s, Jumeirah

Perfect for parents trying to home school children or for anyone who has smashed through all the reading material on their bookshelves already. Magrudy's is Jumeirah's stalwart bookstore and it will be open on a daily basis from 10am until 8pm. Head here to stock up on books, stationery, e-learning supplies and more. O Concept, Jumeirah

This Jumeirah store has a curated selection of apparel, home decor, accessories and art, as well as a great selection of coffee, all under one roof. It's also far from the city's malls – you'll find it in the Beach Hotel Apartment. Shoppers can visit from Saturday, April 25, with Ramadan hours set from noon until 10pm, www.oconceptstore.ae

DIA Textiles, Bur Dubai

If it’s pashminas, shawls, or caftans you need, the textile souq is your best bet. Head to DIA Textiles for a great selection of clothing, handicrafts and accessories. Ramadan opening hours are from 9am to 5pm and there are some new rules in place for everyone’s safety. These include only allowing two customers in the store at any one time and no children under 12. Gloves and masks are musts and payment by card is preferred.

O'De Rose, Jumeirah

Head to O'de Rose's converted villa on Al Wasl Road to source Boho fashion and lifestyle items curated from across the world, or handmade by local artisans. It's a good option if you're looking for a special gift and they stock everything from clothing and artwork to home decor and accessories. As it's in a villa, this place doesn't tend to get too crowded other than during events which, according to the store, are on hold for the moment. Ramadan hours are noon until 6pm https://www.o-derose.com/

Other ways to buy used products in the UAE

UAE insurance firm Al Wathba National Insurance Company (AWNIC) last year launched an e-commerce website with a facility enabling users to buy car wrecks.

Bidders and potential buyers register on the online salvage car auction portal to view vehicles, review condition reports, or arrange physical surveys, and then start bidding for motors they plan to restore or harvest for parts.

Physical salvage car auctions are a common method for insurers around the world to move on heavily damaged vehicles, but AWNIC is one of the few UAE insurers to offer such services online.

For cars and less sizeable items such as bicycles and furniture, Dubizzle is arguably the best-known marketplace for pre-loved.

Founded in 2005, in recent years it has been joined by a plethora of Facebook community pages for shifting used goods, including Abu Dhabi Marketplace, Flea Market UAE and Arabian Ranches Souq Market while sites such as The Luxury Closet and Riot deal largely in second-hand fashion.

At the high-end of the pre-used spectrum, resellers such as Timepiece360.ae, WatchBox Middle East and Watches Market Dubai deal in authenticated second-hand luxury timepieces from brands such as Rolex, Hublot and Tag Heuer, with a warranty.

WHEN TO GO:

September to November or March to May; this is when visitors are most likely to see what they’ve come for.

WHERE TO STAY:

Meghauli Serai, A Taj Safari - Chitwan National Park resort (tajhotels.com) is a one-hour drive from Bharatpur Airport with stays costing from Dh1,396 per night, including taxes and breakfast. Return airport transfers cost from Dh661.

HOW TO GET THERE:

Etihad Airways regularly flies from Abu Dhabi to Kathmandu from around Dh1,500 per person return, including taxes. Buddha Air (buddhaair.com) and Yeti Airlines (yetiairlines.com) fly from Kathmandu to Bharatpur several times a day from about Dh660 return and the flight takes just 20 minutes. Driving is possible but the roads are hilly which means it will take you five or six hours to travel 148 kilometres.
