The location

The original branch of Loca, at Jumeirah’s Dubai Marine Beach Resort & Spa, has been a popular hangout with seasoned Dubaians for six years and counting. Now the evergreen concept has been picked up and replanted in central Souk Al Bahar, in the secluded ground floor spot that housed Crystal’s failed Japanese venture Sake No Hana. But Loca makes use of the prime location in a way the previous tenants never did, with a peaceful (licensed) outdoor terrace with great Burj Khalifa views.

The atmosphere

“Loca 1.0” has long defied easy definition – indeed, it’s no exaggeration to reveal that editors at otherwise-lucid entertainment magazines lost hours of their lives debating, for annual awards purposes, whether the venue should qualify as a pub, sports bar, live music venue or Mexican restaurant. In truth, it’s a bit of all four, and Loca 2.0 is a near identikit transplantation of the concept, mixing the trademark industrial chic with a large chalkboard advertising the day’s upcoming kick-offs.

The food

It may be Mexican, but this is no greasy buffet fare, with five courses served straight to the table. The trademark guacamole is crushed right in front of you (served with corn chips, naturally). There’s a breakfast flavour to the next course, with eggs served three ways, alongside meat and fish offerings. Next come the tacos – pulled beef, chicken and kingfish – served small, soft, authentic and tasty. There’s a choice of five mains, which include the familiar fajitas and burrito options alongside pollo en mole, slow roasted ribs and an epic tostada salad.

Who’s it best for?

The relaxed vibe and comfort food make it ideal for a catch-up with old pals, while the Burj views will impress visiting guests. Just remember: Mexican food and dates don’t mix.

The verdict

An old favourite reinvented in a spectacular spot, it’s a guaranteed hit. Watch out – we’ve heard whispers Loca 3.0 is landing in Abu Dhabi soon.
