Abel Tesfaye, popularly known by his stage name The Weeknd, has been making headlines lately, due to his whirlwind romance with pop star Selena Gomez, which began soon after his break-up with model Bella Hadid. Though we here at The National have refrained from indulging in the gossip, the mainstream media is following every step of the stars' relationship, from the initial liplock spotted behind a dumpster in California and Gomez's lyrical mention in one of The Weeknd's recent tracks, to the latest rumours that Gomez met The Weeknd's family in Toronto.
But, rather than focusing on the singer’s romantic interest, and whether or not Hadid unfollowed Gomez on Instagram before Gomez unfollowed Hadid, we’re more interested in The Weekend’s growing status as an urban streetwear icon and fashion ambassador.
The star typically dresses in black and hues of blue, with the occasional spot of denim or camouflage patterning. He certainly has expensive taste, often turning to Saint Laurent menswear for his sartorial looks. On New Year's Eve in Las Vegas, for instance, he performed wearing a military-style Saint Laurent jacket and in his music video for Reminder, he was decked out in a Saint Laurent tapestry coat. Most recently, he was spotted wearing the Blouson de Baseball Teddy Noir bomber jacket from the label, while vacationing in Argentina with Gomez.
Wouldn’t it be something if The Weeknd, who is a brand ambassador for Puma and is reportedly releasing a “Starboy” clothing line, teamed up with Saint Laurent to eternalise his love for the fashion house, much like fellow singer Zayn Malik has with Versus, Versace? Now that’s a designer collaboration we would love to see.
