Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation, discussed regional security and stability on a call with Robert Malley, US President Joe Biden's Special Envoy to Iran.

They talked about strategic relations between the UAE and the US, Wam news agency reported.

“Developments in the region and a number of regional and international issues of common interest and joint co-operation ... for the sake of consolidating the pillars of security and stability in the region” were also discussed.

Mr Malley was appointed to the role last month and the Biden administration has made clear its commitment to consult its allies closely on its intention to address Iran's nuclear threat and the status of the 2015 deal.

On the call with Mr Malley, Sheikh Abdullah underlined the UAE’s commitment to strengthening its relations with the Biden administration and “working closely ... to reduce regional tensions, start a new dialogue and consolidate co-operation frameworks under the umbrella of the Abraham Accord”, Wam said.

Sheikh Abdullah also highlighted the historically strong relationship between the two countries.

On Thursday, Sheikh Abdullah spoke to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

The two reviewed strategic relations between Abu Dhabi and Washington, and the US as well as issues of common concern, including the normalisation of relations between the UAE and Israel.

They also discussed developments in the Gulf and joint efforts to confront threats and maintain security and stability in the region, Wam reported.

Sheikh Abdullah and Mr Blinken praised mutual relations and the collaboration between the two countries in various areas.

Islamophobia definition

A widely accepted definition was made by the All Party Parliamentary Group on British Muslims in 2019: “Islamophobia is rooted in racism and is a type of racism that targets expressions of Muslimness or perceived Muslimness.” It further defines it as “inciting hatred or violence against Muslims”.

Conflict, drought, famine

Estimates of the number of deaths caused by the famine range from 400,000 to 1 million, according to a document prepared for the UK House of Lords in 2024.
It has been claimed that the policies of the Ethiopian government, which took control after deposing Emperor Haile Selassie in a military-led revolution in 1974, contributed to the scale of the famine.
Dr Miriam Bradley, senior lecturer in humanitarian studies at the University of Manchester, has argued that, by the early 1980s, “several government policies combined to cause, rather than prevent, a famine which lasted from 1983 to 1985. Mengistu’s government imposed Stalinist-model agricultural policies involving forced collectivisation and villagisation [relocation of communities into planned villages].
The West became aware of the catastrophe through a series of BBC News reports by journalist Michael Buerk in October 1984 describing a “biblical famine” and containing graphic images of thousands of people, including children, facing starvation.

Band Aid

Bob Geldof, singer with the Irish rock group The Boomtown Rats, formed Band Aid in response to the horrific images shown in the news broadcasts.
With Midge Ure of the band Ultravox, he wrote the hit charity single Do They Know it’s Christmas in December 1984, featuring a string of high-profile musicians.
Following the single’s success, the idea to stage a rock concert evolved.
Live Aid was a series of simultaneous concerts that took place at Wembley Stadium in London, John F Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia, the US, and at various other venues across the world.
The combined event was broadcast to an estimated worldwide audience of 1.5 billion.
