World Cup dream ends for Saudi Arabia as Argentina, Poland, France and Australia advance
Australia secured their berth in the knockout stage with a decisive 1-0 Group C victory against Euro 2020 semi-finalists Denmark.
Meanwhile, a heavily rotated France team suffered a shock 0-1 result against Tunisia.
In Group D, it was Argentina who topped their group after a convincing 2-0 win against second-place Poland.
And a late goal from Saudi Arabia ended Mexico's hopes of advancing in the tournament as the Concacaf country failed to overcome the goal-difference tiebreaker against Poland.
On Thursday, everything is up for grabs in Group E. Spain take on Japan while Germany, sitting bottom, need a win against Costa Rica to advance.
In Group F, Morocco will look to become the second African nation to book their place in the latter part of the tournament, meeting Canada.
And Croatia take on Belgium in another high-stakes game.
Mexico end Saudi Arabia's World Cup dream but still exit tournament
Mexico struck twice in five minutes, and Saudi Arabia’s World Cup dream was done.
The conquerors of Argentina would ultimately have only that to show for Qatar 2022, a second successive Group C defeat consigning the Gulf side to the foot of the standings.
Given what Herve Renard’s men have provided this past fortnight, it felt hugely unfair.
At least the trip home would be short. Yet painful, too.
Argentina ease through to last 16 despite Lionel Messi's penalty lapse
For all his superhuman efforts in almost all parts of the game, Lionel Messi’s penalty record is very, very ordinary.
But his 30th career miss from the spot mattered little as his teammates stepped up to fire Argentina to a 2-0 win over Poland and a place in the World Cup last 16.

All eyes were on the skipper in a raucous atmosphere at Stadium 974, but for those there just to see the 35-year-old superstar, they would have left disappointed after seeing him blow his big chance.

Too little, too late for Mexico. They were incredibly dominant in the second half and streamed forward with attack after attack.
They scored two - including a wonderful free kick by Luis Chavez, as well as having two goals rightly disallowed for offside.
But it wasn't enough. While Mexico chased a goal to put them above Poland on goal difference,
Saudi Arabia's Salem Al Dawsari scored a goal in the final minutes of stoppage time to end Mexican hopes of qualifying.
Saudi Arabia go out bottom of the table, despite beating Argentina in their first game.
It felt like one game too far. A valiant effort from the Green Falcons, but they looked tired and were out of the game for almost the entire second half.
