SHARJAH // Sharjah Police have arrested a group of men for stealing backup batteries and cables from more than 30 signal strengthening posts.

Police say the thefts by the men, from Asia, were to blame for service disruption in some areas.

Two of the men were employed at a company contracted by telecommunications companies for field work and had access to the posts, police said.

Maj Abdullah Al Maleh, head of CID in the central region, said the companies had filed reports of thefts after reported service disruptions in the area.

He said police arrested the suspects after finding some of the stolen batteries on display at a used parts store in Al Dhaid.

The store owner told police that two men rented out a part of the store and used it to display the stolen batteries for sale.

Police said further questioning showed the men’s connection to the two employees, who were then arrested.

The suspects have been referred to Sharjah Prosecution to face charges.
